S5W16F8

43F, 79% humidity, 2 mph NNE wind gusts to 4mph, dry grass with damp soil

Two 90 degree turns- 1st had woods ahead and 2nd was turning so trees were behind.

Aged 1 hour and had a few extra food drops coming out of the scuff after the turns.

Outcome:

New SWF seemed ok for her on the legs. On 2nd leg she turned and went behind me to get the missed food.

No problem going toward the woods and taking right turns. She didn’t overshoot or shortcut the turn. This was so nice and felt just easy. On the 2nd turn she went beyond the turn and her head came up so I stopped. She was looking left and starting to move then she moved right and was pulling. I didn’t go with her since she was at least a yard parallel to the track. She kept pulling but faded back into the track. Food drops probably helped. I am not really sure if I handled her correctly at this turn. Should I have gone with her even though she was off the track by about a yard? I am using only 5 ft leash so it pulled tight.

Played fetch as her reward which is really bumping up her enthusiasm.

Definitely going to do outdoor article games tomorrow. Maybe, a distance straight track in the S5W16F8

Hi Maureen, I thought she did well on this track. I probably would have gone with her on the second turn even if she was off a little as she most likely would have adjusted after the turn BUT I would defer to what Judi and Mary Ann suggest.

Nice job!

Spot on Valerie! Off by a yard is awesome, and most dogs will drift back to the track. Generally, dogs make a question mark when they turn—a curve in the direction of the leg, that curves into the leg, they hook into the track and go. So give her a little latitude. I think you can advance to a 10 food lead if you’d like…assuming you are usually at <6ft, and just use the 10 when she’s tracking well on a straight line. Next class we will teach you how to play line at a turn, for now, get back up to 6’ or less when you are approaching a turn.
